10/15/1990Bharat Ratna, India's highest award, was given to Dr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (b-1918), the South African black nationalist leader who arrived in India on a five-day visit. He is the first non-Asian to get this honour.

12/16/1992The Parliament adopts resolution condemning the demolition of the mosque at Ayodhya and centre appoints a one-man judicial commission to enquire into the Ayodhya incidents.

5/22/1961Jnanpeeth Award was instituted and the first award was given in 1965. This award is given for the best creative literary writing by any Indian citizen in any of the languages included in the VIII Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The award carries a cash price of Rs 2.5 lakh, a citation and a bronze momento.
6/17/1756Nawab Sira-ud-Daulah attacked on Calcutta with 50,000 soldiers and captured it on June 21.
