Historical Event on 8/9/1942
The Congress at its Bombay session passed the famous Quit India resolution, calling for mass struggle on non-violent lines on the widest possible scale, under the leadership of Gandhiji. He stressed that ""We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery""; popularly known as ""Do or Die"". But before the Congress could start the movement, the government arrested all the major leaders and the Congress was declared illegal. Spontaneous popular revolts broke out with the battle cry of 'British Quit India'.

9/15/1953	S. Vijayalakshmi Pandit was elected as the first lady President of the eighth session of the United Nations Organisation's (UNO) General Assembly.
1/27/1931	Mahatma Gandhi was released from jail, ending eight months of imprisonment for his campaign of civil disobedience against British rule. To avoid demonstrations, Gandhi was released late in the evening from the Yerovda jail and put on a night train to Bombay. There was hope in British circles that the release of Gandhi would end the strife and lead to discussions of dominion status. Gandhi made clear, however, that he would persist in his civil disobedience campaign.
1/29/1955	'Bhartiya Kamgar Kisan Party' established.
10/26/1991	Anantrao Bhalerao, freedom fighter, journalist and editor of daily newspaper 'Marathwada', died.
9/1/1942	Rasbihari Bose established the Indian National Army.
8/1/1996	T. S. R. Subramaniam was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary of India. He held this office till 31-03-1998.
12/21/1998	The Viswabharati University in Calcutta presents the 'Deshikottama' award to Nobel laureate Prof. Amartya Sen.
