Historical Event on 5/31/1970

Indira Gandhi called for international help as the civil war in Bangladesh, or East Pakistan, had turned two million people into refugees. Many of them were suffering from cholera and smallpox. The authorities of West Pakistan refused to care for them, and India couldn't afford to.

8/11/1984A cloud of toxic chemicals escaped from a Union Carbide plant near Charleston, West Virginia, this morning, and at least 135 residents were treated for eye, throat, and lung irritation. Last December, methyl isocyanate gas escaped from a Union Carbide plant in India, killing 2,000 people. No MIC escaped today, plant officials said. Aldicarb oxime, a much less toxic gas, is declared as one constituent of the gas cloud.
3/1/1961The first AN-12B arrived in India. This was added in the force because of the increasing frequency of clashes with Chinese forces on the Sino-lndian Himalayan border and the need that these revealed for yet further increase in airlift capability, together with a requirement for medium helicopters suitable for high-altitude operation, orders were placed in the Soviet Union for eight Antonov An- 12B and 24IL-yushin 11- 14 transport aircraft plus 10 Mi-4 helicopters.
